Misty Landscape Watercolor in Monochrome

Misty landscapes are great to paint with watercolors as the medium really lends itself to creating the softness and depth found in these soft hazy scenes.

Techniques for Mist & Fog

There are a few core techniques I use when painting mist and fog that I thought would be helpful to share with you here in case it helps:

• Wet-on-Wet: Watercolor’s ‘signature’ wet-on-wet effect that creates soft faded edges is perfect for mist & fog.

• Softening Edges: Taking a ‘hard’ edge in watercolor and feathering or softening it out with water is a great way to create the look of fog encroaching over a mountain top or floating over the base of trees

• Layering: Layering differing values is what will create a sense of depth in these paintings

I also chose to paint this painting using a single color. Working with a single color might feel “simple” but it actually allows us to practice 2 things:

1. Value scales or working with values

2. Water-to-paint-ratio

• Artist Masking Tape

• Old fluffy brush with dry bristles
